Develop Better Social Media Habits

Develop Better Social Media Habits

Most of us spend too much unproductive time in front of social media during the day. Like Alec Baldwin’s alien character in the recent Hulu Super Bowl commercial says, “What are you going to do, turn off your TV and your computer? Ha!”

It’s sadly true. Television is one of the most unproductive habits you can engage yourself in. Though some people advocate getting rid of your TV altogether, I think I’d rather be slightly unproductive than miss Lost.  The internet and social media have together created another hole for us to get trapped in.  But, we have a choice: keep digging, or stay out.

I love Facebook.  It allows me (much more-so than MySpace did) to keep in touch with current friends, family, and even friends I haven’t seen face-to-face for 10+ years.  However, if you let yourself get overwhelmed with invitations, wall-posts, and applications – it’s easy for just this one site alone to consume you.  Here’s a few tips to make your Facebook time less interfering and more productive.

- Write down what you want your Facebook experience to be.  For me, it’s simply to stay in touch with people.
- Turn off email alerts.  This will prevent you from clicking through every time someone adds you to something and distracting you from what you were focused on.
- Block invitations from people or applications.  I appreciate you want to give me a bumper sticker, but it doesn’t do anything for my life (or yours).
- Set aside time for Facebook.  If you know you’ll only spend 15 minutes each day checking friends, leaving messages, etc – you’ll now have the rest of the day freed up to build your empire.

Continued Below...

These tips can be translated to almost any site that is sucking your productivity away.  I’ll put together a Twitter post another time, but for now – do whatever it takes to make your online life less of a distraction.

How do you prevent social sites from eating up your productivity?

  • Nice post. It is easy to stay on Facebook hours at a time with the email alerts, invitations, etc.
  • If I took the time to respond to every Facebook request, I would just get sucked deeper in. I like using it for friends and family, but I find that Twitter (using TweetDeck) is my favorite.

I turn off email alerts for most services, but I still find that once I go to the site (like Digg), I have a hard time keeping it brief.

    Thanks!

Funny to see that I'm not the only one who is having that difficulty. Since I've got an iPhone it's even worse. I keep on checking if I've received a message via email or my social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or Hyves (NL)). It's become some kind of addiction. ;) So I might need to apply some time management too ... ;)
  • Social sites are a fun way to keep in touch with your friends. You can limit your time on Facebook by checking it once a day, preferably not during work hours. It isn't as time sensitive as twitter or texting.
  • A few years back we have decided to cut TV network. I didn't mid it at all. True, we're missing LOST but that's alright with me ;)

I have a Facebook account but I use it the way you mentioned here. I don;t do those gift exchange stuff, etc. The only reason I joined is because most of our church friends joined and it's nice to hear what's going on in their lives as well as share some of what's going on in mine.

Now, my favorite at this time is TWITTER. I find it easy, less time consuming and effective in business networking. It works well for me.

Thanks for this post. I think it's a helpful guideline on social media networking :)

  • Nice post. The ones I'm using daily are Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, Plaxo Pulse...not spending much time there but maintaining and adding to when I can. Twitter I spend mostly at night while watching basketball at the moment...I try to check them all several times a day. But its tough to find the time to build out social media quicker and leverage it properly...
  • This is some of the best advice you can get as far as social media goes and you can use any social media website in place of Facebook, but Facebook is pretty much the most addicting social media platform out there right now and I cannot agree more with you that it's better than MySpace. It is so easy to get lost in Facebook!
  • My first step was become disinterested in most things on TV. Of course every so often this will slip and i will see 3 or 4 hours disappear, however, i have also taken to keeping a to do list. That i keep a score against of what i wanted to get done that day and what i actually got done. It sure makes you think i wasted my day when you work out you only got 15% of what you wanted to do done. And it makes you think maybe i should skip facebook this hour.
  • Too true Elliott. Time management is extremely important if you have other things to do besides hang out on social media sites all day. I need to focus on this more.

    Thanks for the reminder.
